think big: tip #5

We’ve had ideas and tips on starting small but now we’ve got a tip on thinking big for going greener and saving green from Amber Strocel:
I’ve had a long-time love affair with convenience food. It’s so, you know, convenient, especially when you’re feeding little kids. String cheese and toddler-sized tubs of yogurt were staples at our house, and in my daughter’s school lunches. But then I started thinking about the waste I was producing, and the money I was spending.
My biggest green tip is to pass up the convenience food. Anything that comes in an individual serving size is heavy on the packaging and expensive, to boot. Plus, many of these foods aren’t even all that good for us. Buy your cheese in a big block and cut off a few slices. Buy your yogurt in a big tub, and pack it in a reusable container. Slice your own carrots, and eat a piece of fruit instead of a “fruit” snack. You’ll save money, eat better and produce a lot less waste. The planet will thank you, and so will your bank account.
