As you may already know, I’m a big Flip fan. When we snagged an older model Ultra on Amazon for $50 we had to try it out and we reviewed it on yoyomama in July. So when Momcentral Canada touched base to see if we’d be up for reviewing the Flip MinoHD we jumped at the chance!
Though the basics of the Flip are the same – whether it’s the Ultra we originally tested or the MinoHD – we’re bigger fans of the MinoHD. But first a review of the basic fabness of the Flip: it’s super easy to use; there are no cords or wires, thanks to the pop-out USB arm; and it’s small and portable.
The MinoHD however, has some benefits over our basic model Ultra which only had 30 minutes of memory. When we got it we figured 3o minutes was heaps of time. Surely even our children weren’t that fascinating? But apparently they are as we quickly and frequently ran out of space. The MinoHD has 60 minutes of memory which gives us lots more wiggle room and it’s much smaller and sleeker than the Ultra, which is hardly large, but when it comes to cramming stuff into your purse or diaper bag, smaller is always better.
But what we may like best about it is that it’s designable. You can choose from heaps of cool patterns and designs from their design gallery or you can upload your own image. Well, I wasn’t going to miss this opportunity to customize mine. First I toyed with using the yoyomama or yoyobelly logo, but frankly it was a bit meh. Good branding but it didn’t pop. So the doting mama in me came out again and I went with a photo of the girls instead (pictured).
I’m using “we” in this review a lot because I must admit I’m not the videographer in my family. My husband, A, with his background in Film and TV post production and his editorial skills is much more of a flipper than me so I’ve drawn on his opinion here too. In fact we have a video he’s edited to share with you, but it’s not quite perfect yet, so he’s going to fiddle with it a bit more.
But we did think it would be neat to compare an Ultra video with an HD video so you can see the differences in video quality, so we’ll upload one of each that you can compare and contrast.
But I wouldn’t be going on and on about my luck in testing the Flip MinoHD without there being something in it for you as well. Mom Central Canada is giving away three customizable Flip MinoHDs but to enter you’re going to need our Flip password, which is Yoyo.
